Why clocks change

Daylight saving time moves the clocks forward by an hour in spring, so evenings stay light for longer, and back again in autumn. The northern and southern hemispheres change in opposite seasons, so the time difference between, say, London and Sydney changes twice a year.

Questions and answers

When do the clocks change?

It depends on the country. Most of Europe changes on the last Sunday of March and October, and most of the US and Canada on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. Pick a city to see its exact dates.

Do all countries use daylight saving time?

No. Most countries near the equator and many others, including Japan, China and India, keep the same time all year.
