About Unix time

Unix time ignores leap seconds and time zones: the same timestamp means the same moment everywhere. JavaScript and Java use milliseconds, most databases and Unix tools use seconds, and some systems use microseconds or nanoseconds.

Questions and answers

What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC, known as the Unix epoch. It is the same everywhere in the world, which makes it useful for computers.

Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?

Timestamps for current dates have 10 digits in seconds and 13 digits in milliseconds. The converter detects the unit from the number of digits.

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32-bit number overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Modern systems use 64-bit numbers and are not affected.
